Hello, young learners!
Welcome back to Basic Science Technology. In our previous lesson, we learned about the importance of science in our daily lives. Today, we’re going to learn about Technology.
Objectives
By the end of this lesson, you should be able to:
- Define technology.
- List and explain different forms of technology.
- Identify products of developed and underdeveloped technology.
Technology
What is Technology?
Technology is the use of scientific knowledge to create tools, machines, and systems that help us solve problems or achieve goals. It’s all around us, from the simple tools we use at home to the complex machines that power our world.
Forms of Technology
There are many different forms of technology, and they are constantly evolving But they can be classified into two main groups, namely: Developed Technology and Underdeveloped Technology.
Developed Technology
Developed technology are modern advanced and complex tools and systems that have been improved through scientific research and innovation. These technologies are designed to make life easier and more efficient by incorporating the latest advancements.
Examples of Developed Technology:
- Smartwatches
- Drones
- Smartphones
- 3D Printers
- Virtual Reality Headsets
- Home Automation Systems
- Electric Bicycles
- Robotic Assistants
- Self-Driving Cars
- High-Speed Internet Networks
- Wearable Health Monitors
- Augmented Reality Glasses
Underdeveloped Technology
Underdeveloped technology are simpler, less advanced tools and systems that often rely on manual operation and traditional methods. These technologies have fewer features, are slower and not very efficient.
Examples of Underdeveloped Technology:
- Manual Typewriters
- Analog Telephones
- Basic Calculators
- Non-Electric Sewing Machines
- Mechanical Clocks
- Traditional water wells
- Hand-Cranked Radios
- Oil Lamps
- Simple Hand Tools (e.g., hammers, screwdrivers)
- Basic Air Conditioning Units
- Wooden Agricultural Plows
- Manual Water Purifiers
- Traditional Drafting Tools
- Coal Stoves
- Basic Thermometers (e.g., mercury thermometers)
- Simple Mechanical Watches
Classes of technology
While we can broadly group technology into Developed and Underdeveloped based on how advanced or basic it is, technology can further be classified based on it’s general application, or area it is used. This is because different types of technology serve various purposes and areas of life. The key classes of the forms of technology are:
- Communication Technology: This includes devices and systems that help us communicate with each other, such as telephones, computers, and the internet.
- Transportation Technology:Â This includes vehicles and systems that help us move from one place to another, such as cars, trains, and airplanes.
- Medical Technology:Â This includes devices and systems that help us diagnose and treat illnesses, such as X-ray machines, microscopes, and medical software.
- Educational Technology: This includes tools and resources that help us learn and teach, such as computers, tablets, and online learning platforms.
- Agricultural Technology: This includes tools and techniques that help us grow food and raise livestock, such as tractors, fertilizers, and genetically modified crops.
- Entertainment Technology: This includes devices and systems that help us enjoy ourselves, such as televisions, video games, and music players.
- Construction Technology: This includes tools and techniques that help us build structures, such as cranes, bulldozers, and concrete mixers.
- Energy Technology: This includes devices and systems that help us generate and use energy, such as solar panels, wind turbines, and power plants.
- Environmental Technology: This includes tools and techniques that help us protect and improve the environment, such as recycling systems, pollution control devices, and renewable energy sources.
Evaluation Questions
Now that you’ve learned about technology, let’s see if you can answer these questions:
- What is technology?
- Give an example of a form of technology related to communication.
- Name one developed and one underdeveloped technology product.
- Can you think of any other forms of technology not mentioned in the lesson?
- How does technology impact our lives?
Conclusion
Technology plays a vital role in our lives, making many things easier, faster, and more efficient. It helps us communicate, travel, learn, and entertain ourselves. By understanding different forms and products of technology, we can appreciate its importance and use it responsibly. Keep exploring and learning about technology, and remember that it’s constantly evolving!
